COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

On Wednesday evening, investigators responded to a call about a body being found in the parking lot of a church.

This is the first murder in this city in two months.

The coroner says victim is a 57-year-old man named David Rutherford, and he believes the man died about 12 hours ago. He was reportedly robbed and killed near his home and dumped in the parking lot of a nearby church.

We are told the body was found in plain sight in the back parking lot of Greater Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church. The case is still under investigation.

Linda Robinson, President of the East Highland Neighborhood Watch, was shocked to find out that a neighbor who lived four houses down was found dead at a church on Talbotton Rd.

"It's a lot of burglaries going on around here, and now murder," she says.

Kelsey Ellison lives in the same neighborhood.

"We don't know what. It's still no clue to what happened last night and this guy didn't bother any body--- he was in his boxers and T-shirt when they found him," says Ellison.

Family members say Rutherford was a cab driver. He had come home from work around 10 a.m. and had not been seen all afternoon.

Investigators were combing through evidence in the field across from Rutherford's East Highland home on 28th St. while police work to find out how this man was killed.
