Rep. Roby reads concerns from constituents on House floor

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R- District 2 spoke on the floor of the U.S House of Representatives Tuesday evening in response to President Barack Obama's announcement of a new, aggressive push for regulations on American energy producers.

During her remarks, Rep. Roby shared concerns directly from constituents of Alabama's Second Congressional District.

"Over the last few days, I have utilized social media to ask my constituents how higher energy costs from President Obama's ‘war on coal' will affect them.  Having access to affordable energy is an issue that touches every single American. More costly restrictions on energy producers mean higher electricity bills, more expensive groceries and increased gas prices. Americans need affordable energy to make ends meet, and that's why I've joined House Republicans in pushing for an ‘all-of-the-above' strategy that will keep costs low while putting us on a path to energy independence."

This week, the House will consider H.R. 2231, the Offshore Energy and Jobs Act. Roby says the legislation would expand U.S. offshore energy production in order to create American jobs, lower energy costs, grow the economy and strengthen national security by lowering the nation's dependence on foreign oil. The bill also removes barriers that currently block production of more than 85 percent of American offshore areas.

The legislation comes at a time when President Obama just announced a renewed focus on climate change.  Hours before President Obama outlined his national climate strategy, The New York Times' quoted Daniel P. Schrag, a climate advisor to President Obama, saying that "a war on coal is exactly what's needed."
