Metro-Columbus unemployment rate now 8.5%

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The Georgia Department of Labor has just announced that the Metro-Columbus unemployment rate has increased to 8.5% in May. That's up from 7.9% the month before.

The same time last year the unemployment rate was 8.7%.

They say the increase is mainly because of the seasonal increase of job-seekers into the labor force as new graduates begin looking for work.

Most job gains were seen in hospitality, trade and transportation, professional and business services, and federal and local government.

The entire state of Georgia is doing a little better. Its unemployment rate for May was at 8.3%.

The same time last year the unemployment rate was 9.1%.
