FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

The public is invited to join Fort Benning in celebrating America at an Independence Day extravaganza from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on York Field this Saturday June 29.

Bridgett Siter from the Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation stopped by our studios on Thursday to tell us what we can expect this year and explain why Fort Benning holds the extravaganza on June 29 instead of July 4.

Siter said soldiers get a pass on July 4, so they celebrate on June 29 instead which allows soldiers to go home and celebrate the holiday with their families.

The 34-foot airborne training tower will be open to budding paratroopers from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The MCoE Band will perform on York Field from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.  The MCoE Band will be followed by The Farm, which will perform from 7:30-9 p.m.  As a prelude to the fireworks, the MCoE Band will again take the stage at 9:30 and will play through the fireworks display scheduled for 10-10:30 p.m.

Concessions selling food and drink items will be available.  Displays provided by the event's corporate sponsors, as well as games, rides and giant inflatables will be accessible beginning at 3 p.m.

There is no admission charge or fee to attend and ample free parking will be available.

Pets are prohibited at this event.

In the event of inclement weather, the June 29 event will be cancelled, however a fireworks display will be held at dusk on June 30.

Due to recent events, attendees may notice an increased level of security on and in the vicinity of York Field. Large purses, shopping bags, coolers, backpacks and other similar items may be subjected to random checks by security personnel.  The installation's goal is to provide a safe environment for our Soldiers, Families and friends from the community as we celebrate our nation's independence.
