Atlanta Falcons getting South GA kids active

With childhood obesity rates rising, the Atlanta Falcons and the NFL are hoping to curb that trend.

The team partnered with the National Youth Sports Program and South Georgia Pop Warner to put on a mini football camp for hundreds of South Georgia kids Wednesday afternoon

The young players went through drills of many football offensive and defensive skills at Albany State's HPER Gym.

NYSP Camp Director Jesse Massey says it's not just about football though.

It's getting the kids up and moving because once they get started, it's easy to keep them going.

"It's real easy after that, because now they're motivated to move around," Massey says.  "It helps burn calories. It helps kids motivate, and probably be even stronger when they decide to play sports."

Several NFL pros and former college players were on hand to help lead the kids through drills and sign autographs.

One was former Georgia Tech RB Orwin Smith, who says it's very important to get kids active.

"Kids are starting to get lazier and lazier, sitting around the house playing games, just watching TV," Smith says. "Just getting them out here and just giving them confidence just to go outside and play. Even if its hot or cold, just go play."
