FORT DEPOSIT, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Fort Deposit over the weekend. The ABI is not releasing any details surrounding the case.

Fort Deposit's police chief could not provide specific details regarding the case, but confirmed the victim did not die. The victim was initially treated at a Greenville hospital before being airlifted to a Montgomery hospital for unknown injuries.

The emergency call came from a house on Lowndes County Road 45, and witnesses say it wasn't the first time the officer had responded to the address.

Stanley Simmons says the incident involved his step-daughter and her 21-year-old boyfriend, Travis Thigpen. Simmons says the two were arguing. Simmons says that when the officer entered the house he told Thigpen to put his hands up.

Simmons re-enacted the moments leading up to the shooting. "He [the officer] told him [Thigpen] to get on the floor," Simmons explained, "and when he went to drop the hands, he [the officer] just hauled off and shot him."

Simmons claims Thigpen did not have a weapon was being fully compliant with the officer's demands. "He [the officer] was wrong off the top."

The ABI's involvement is protocol since an officer discharged his weapon.

Simmons says it could have been worse. When Thigpen was shot, the house was full of children ages 2-10, and they witnessed the incident.

The officer, who is not identified, remains on paid administrative leave pending a completed ABI investigation. Spokesman Sgt. Steve Jarrett says upon completion of the investigation, the facts will be turned over to the District Attorney's office for review.

WSFA 12 News is working to develop additional details surrounding this case. We'll add that information to this story as it becomes available.
