Georgia Power Company is looking to increase rates by 6.1 percent, which means you could pay nearly $8 extra per month.

The request will be under consideration by the public service commission for the next six months.

If approved, the hike goes into effect in January. Georgia Power says it needs the extra $480 million to pay for equipment and install lines.
