COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Jasmine Hayes knows the violence in East Highland more than most. Nearly three years ago she was shot in the head in her own front yard, and now crime is surging in the area once again.

Hayes and others, like Erica, say despite what people think about the area East Highland is a safe place to live.

"I mean it ain't east highland it's the people that come to East Highland East highland is a good place to me, it ain't bad."

Columbus Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of 17 year-old Cody Mathis. They believe he may have been involved with the killing of popular radio DJ David Rutherford.

Rutherford's body was found in the parking lot of a nearby church. Authorities believe that he could have been attacked somewhere near his home.  Police say they are tracking down any possible leads to Mathis' whereabouts and have reason to believe he is still in the area.

Jasmine Hayes says since the incident there has been a surge in police patrol that is driving outsiders away from East Highland.

"There aren't a lot of people in the street now, maybe they will stay in the house," Hayes said.
If you have information on Cody Mathis' whereabouts you are asked to call Columbus Police at 706-653-3400
