LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Despite only 20 citations issued, the fighting among fans during a soccer match between Mexican rivals at Sam Boyd Stadium on Wednesday resulted in no arrests, according to police.

Las Vegas Metro police disclosed the results Friday of the incident that forced officers to don riot gear and break up brawling among fans of Club America and Chivas del Guadalajara.

Numerous Metro vehicles were seen flooding into the stadium ahead of the El Super Clasico, the soccer exhibition in which both teams were slated to play.

Despite the unruly crowd, the match was allowed to proceed. The match would also turn ugly on the field when members of each team reportedly brawled during the game's first half.

Two players from each team were ejected, FOX5's Kevin Bolinger reported.

Police were earlier heard telling fans to go home because it's not "safe inside."

"We are continuing the event because we don't want to disappoint the fans who came from so far away. At this point, things are under control, but for awhile, there were some tense moments," Metro Officer Bill Cassell said.

Witnesses told FOX5 a brawl broke out between two rival groups. Fans fought one another, throwing rocks and bottles. Seven fans were taken to a hospital for treatment, six as a result of the fight. The seventh fan was treated for heat-related illness. Roughly 200 fans were involved.

Metro police said the brawl broke out between fans who had been dropped off at the stadium from shuttle buses.

Club America and Chivas del Guadalajara are fierce Mexican football rivals with a history of on-field violence. The match was expected to draw a crowd of up to 30,000.

Stay tuned to FOX5 for the latest on this developing story.
