COLUMBUS, OH (Press release) -

The Fourth of July is traditionally a dangerous holiday on roadways, particularly for impaired driving.

Last year, 263 drivers were arrested for drug and alcohol-related charges on July 4. Impaired driving also contributed to 87 crashes statewide.

"Drivers have the responsibility to protect their life and the lives of others by choosing not to drink and drive," said ODOT Director Jerry Wray. "We want motorists to avoid becoming a statistic."

Here are some tips to stay safe this holiday weekend:

DRIVE SAFELY

  • Leave about one car length per 10 mph of speed between vehicles
  • Stay alert and watch for animals on the side of the road
  • Come to a complete stop and look both ways before entering the highway

PLAN AHEAD

  • ODOT's website provides up-to-the-minute information and a user-friendly map of work zone locations, traffic congestion alerts, road closures, and weather conditions 24/7.

While construction work may be suspended over the July 4th holiday weekend, many permanent work zone restrictions remain in place. Below is a list of notable highway construction projects that could impact your holiday weekend travel.

CENTRAL OHIO

-Interstates 71/670, Franklin County

Two lanes are maintained in each direction on I-71 and I-670 throughout the construction zone.

Access to the airport is not impacted. The reduced speed of 45 mph is strictly enforced.

-Interstate 71, Delaware and Morrow Counties

Work continues to widen the final 25-mile section of I-71 between Columbus and Cleveland to three lanes. Two lanes of traffic are maintained in each direction.

-Roberts Road (West Side), Franklin County

Drivers will be shifted into a new traffic pattern at Roberts Road and I-270 to allow crews to start construction on the wall at the new interchange.

Here is how motorists will travel safely through the interchange:

  • Eastbound Roberts Road traffic will have one through lane over the bridge and a left turn only lane to access I-270 north.
  • After the bridge, eastbound traffic will have one lane that is actually on the westbound side of the road.
  • Westbound traffic will still have two lanes of travel.

-Interstate 270 (Southwest Side), Franklin County

Three lanes will be maintained in each direction between Broad Street and Roberts Road. One of the three northbound lanes will be a contraflow, or express lane.

For the I-270 project, drivers can enter the express lane to the left just before Broad Street and will not be able to exit until just before Roberts Road. A portable barrier wall will separate the northbound express lane and the three southbound lanes.

Motorists traveling northbound who wish to exit at Broad Street or I-70 should stay in the right two lanes of I-270 north, NOT the express lane.

Two lanes will be maintained in each direction on I-270 between US 62 and Broad Street. All ramps will remain open.

The speed limit through the work zone will be reduced to 55 mph so drivers should allow for extra time for their commute and remain alert since this is a seven mile construction zone.

EASTERN OHIO

-Interstate 70, Licking County

Three bridge replacements, an interchange reconfiguration and bridge repair, and interchange reconstruction projects are ongoing in Licking County on I-70.

The project locations are:

  1. Bridge replacement located at the Muskingum/Licking County line Interchange reconfiguration and bridge repair at the SR 79 interchange State Route 79 north and southbound is reduced to one 11' width lane of traffic, as well as the I-70 east and westbound Exit 129 A (exit for SR 79 southbound) and B (exit for SR 79 northbound) are also restricted to 11' foot width.
  2. Bridge replacement and interchange reconstruction of SR 158 and I-70
  3. Canal Road Bridge replacement (2 miles west of SR 79 )

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction at the projects listed above on IR 70, and two-lane traffic will be maintained on SR 158.

-State Route 7, Jefferson County

SR 7 is reduced to one lane between Brilliant and Rush Run for landslide repairs.

-Interstate 77, Tuscarawas County

Almost 4 miles of resurfacing from the Guernsey County line to just south of Newcomerstown. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction during the week, but all lanes must remain open to traffic by noon on Friday through Sunday.

WESTERN OHIO

-Interstate 75, Montgomery County

I-75 from Third Street to Main Street is under construction due to the modernization of the interstate through the city of Dayton. Two lanes of traffic will remain open to northbound motorists.  Three lanes will be open to southbound motorists. Motorists need to stay alert, as traffic patterns are currently not in their traditional places at this location.

-Interstate 75, Miami County

Motorists will encounter construction in the area of I-75 and US 36 near Piqua. Two lanes of traffic will remain open on I-75 in this area.

-Interstate 75, Shelby County

Motorists will encounter construction in the area of I-75 near Sidney. Southbound motorists will notice a contraflow lane which will take a portion of southbound traffic onto the northbound side. Two lanes of traffic will remain open on I-75 in this area.

NORTHERN OHIO

-Interstate 90, Lorain County

I-90, over the Black River and Ford Road, is reduced to two narrowed 11' lane widths of traffic in each direction for bridge deck replacements. The restrictions will remain in place through November 2013.

-Interstate 76, Medina County

I-76, between State Route 57 and State Route 21 in Summit County, is reduced to narrowed lanes of traffic for a rehabilitation project. Two lanes of traffic westbound are being maintained using the contraflow traffic configuration. Eastbound traffic is reduced to one lane between SR 57 and SR 94, and two lanes between SR 94 and the Summit County line. The project will be complete in September 2013.

  • Hartman Road, at its bridge over Interstate 76, is closed for structure repairs as part of the I-76 rehabilitation project. Detour is posted. The road is expected to reopen in early July, 2013.
  • The State Route 94 entrance ramp to I-76 westbound is closed for repairs. Motorists should follow SR 94 to I-76, east on I-76, to State Route 261, north on SR 261 to I-76 west. The ramp is expected to reopen in mid-July.

Two 11' foot lanes are being maintained in each direction and I-71 northbound is using a crossover traffic pattern through the remainder of the project. The project is expected to be complete in October 2013.

NORTHEASTERN OHIO

-Interstate 90, Ashtabula County

Traffic traveling on I-90 eastbound between just east of the Conneaut River to the Pennsylvania State line has been crossed over onto the westbound lanes to create a bi-directional traffic pattern. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained at all times in both directions separated by a barrier wall.

-Interstate 90, Ashtabula County

The following lane restrictions and closures are now in place:

  • SR 11 is reduced to one lane in each direction over I-90 via a crossover condition.

  • The SR 11 southbound ramp to I-90 eastbound is closed through late September. The detour is SR 11 south to SR 46 to SR 11 north.
  • State Road over I-90 is closed through early October. The detour is Seven Hills Road to Jefferson Road to SR 46.

-Interstate 77, Stark County

Motorists traveling on I-77 northbound from the Tuscarawas County line to Fohl Road should be aware of a bi-directional traffic pattern. Although two lanes of traffic is maintained in each direction, northbound traffic is currently split. One lane of northbound traffic is crossed over onto I-77 southbound, while the second lane remains on I-77 northbound.

-Interstate 76 & Interstate 77, Summit County

Beginning Friday, July 5, at 7 p.m., through Monday, July 8, at 6 a.m., the following lane restrictions and ramp closures will occur for bridge painting:
