BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Several vehicles were damaged Thursday evening after hitting a big hole in Interstate 20/59 in downtown Birmingham.

"It scared me, I thought I was going to wreck," said Andrea McNellage of Fultondale.

McNellage hit the hole with her car.

"I almost lost control of my car," she told our photographer while she waited on the side of the interstate to speak with Birmingham Police.

The hole, in the northbound center lane in the Red Mountain Expressway interchange, is about four to five feet wide.

We counted at least eight vehicles pulled over at the 31st Street exit, all with some sort of tire and wheel damage, caused by hitting the hole in the bridge deck.

We found an ALDOT crew beneath the bridge deck inspecting the hole shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday.

We called ALDOT to find out what sort of repairs will be made, but no one answered our calls.
