Funeral service for slain mother of three turns inspirational

(WTVM) -

Friends and family gathered to remember the life of Caneya Webb on Friday, July 5, 2013.

What began as a memorial service for the young woman found dead in her Phenix City apartment turned into an inspirational message for today's youth.

Screams filled the church, and tears streamed down many faces as the young mother was laid to rest. However, even in the midst of tragedy, the service inspired many.

Minister Sandra Anderson, Community Outreach Church of Columbus, encouraged today's youth by calling for a stop to black people committing crimes against each other.

"We blaming the wrong person in all of this," says Anderson. "The young man who took Candy's life is a product of the system that we have created."

Family members told us that Caneya was found dead in her bathtub, tied up with an extension chord. Her mother suspects abuse by her boyfriend, 28 year-old Curtis Newsome.

Anderson's message to youth at today's funeral service was that mainstream media is taking control of their lives, causing them to live powerlessly.

"Young people who have confused real life with entertainment gangster rap, hip hop… started off positive when we were signing about black pride," says Anderson.

Her speech inspired several young men and women to turn their life towards God. Webb's mother and grandmother told us they couldn't have imagined a better send-off for Caneya.

Latunja Webb, Caneya's mother, says, "It was a positive note for everyone in the young generation, so I'm at peace now. I know she's in a better place."

Zelzie Bryant, the victim's grandmother, says, "It actually gives me strength to go on tomorrow it really does, to have a fight in me, to have a fight for the young people."

While the cause of Caneya's death has yet to be revealed, friends and family say they have faith in the justice system and know that Caneya's strong spirit and good heart will live on through her young children.
