AL woman gives birth in hospital parking lot during bomb threat evacuation

A young mother gave birth under an oak tree in the parking lot after the hospital she was having the baby in was evacuated due to bomb threats.

Tessa Kilgore, 21, arrived at Walker Baptist Medical Center in labor around 1:30 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2013. She had just been told she was going into active labor and to start pushing when the evacuation was ordered later that morning.

Kilgore was surrounded by two nurses, her doctor, the baby's father La'Darrick Babbs, her mother and cousin. The group held up blankets for privacy and kept others away from the area.

After about 15 to 20 minutes of active labor in the parking lot, Kilgore gave birth to a healthy, five pound, eight ounce baby girl. Kilgore says they've named her Kylie Babbs.

Authorities said multiple bomb threats were called in around 8:30 a.m. One of the threats was for the hospital, which was completely evacuated in about 15 minutes. The threat was not targeted to a specific area of the hospital, so the entire hospital had to be cleared.

A total of 76 patients were evacuated from the hospital with many of them going across the street to an eye center. The most critical patients were taken to the surgery center nearby, hospital spokesperson Renae McKinney said.

Jasper fire and police departments responded to the scene. A bomb squad swept the entire hospital, which has been cleared for re-entry. Officials did not report finding any threats inside.

Police do have some information about the possible suspect who called in the threat but say they can't release it at this time.

"We do have an investigative team that is working on the source of this threat. We have contacted ATF and other federal agencies to assist," Jasper Police Chief Connie Rowe said.

Another baby is reported to have been born in the hospital parking lot on the same occasion, but authorities have not confirmed any further information on the second birth.

Kilgore says the experience was overwhelming, but that she and baby Kylie are doing fine.
