Columbus State University police have obtained an arrest warrant for Demetrius Cortez Johnson in connection with the weekend arrests of two non-students on drug charges.
University Police assigned several uniform and plainclothes officers to an area near student housing in The Rankin, the historic building owned by CSU at the corner of Broadway and 10th Street, after receiving complaints about suspected drug activity in a neighboring business.
University Police officers arrested Mauritius H. Thomas, 25, of Columbus, and Melvin John Williams, 24, of Phenix City, who are not students, at 3:15 a.m. Sunday after chasing them on foot for four blocks. An unspecified amount of marijuana was seized during the arrests. They were charged with dispensing, distribution or possession of a controlled substance and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
As part of this operation, officers also attempted to stop a car on Front Avenue that immediately fled the scene. Officers pursued the car to Dillingham Street and 10th Aveneue in Phenix City, where the driver ran from the car. University Police reported Johnson is a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history. Anyone with information on Johnson's whereabouts is encouraged to contact CSU police at 706-568-2022.
