MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Federal judge Myron Thompson Tuesday extended a temporary restraining order on HB 57, the "Women's Health and Safety Act".

Judge Thompson's original restraining order was set to expire on July 12. The new restraining order will remain in effect until August 15.

HB 57, which was recently signed into law by Alabama Governor Robert Bentley was hailed by Republican leaders as a way to make abortions safer.

Opponents of the law claim the legislation is just a ploy to force clinics' closure under strain of new, unnecessary requirements.

The suit was brought by plaintiffs Planned Parenthood Southeast, Inc., Reproductive Health Services and June Ayers who say if the law is allowed to be implemented it will result in the closure of 3 of the state's 5 abortion facilities.
