YARNELL, AZ (CBS5) -

Ashes are all that remain of Cliff Fredrick's home, but somehow he managed to stay focused on the positive.

"We got our water running now, so we take a bath outside after dark," Fredrick said laughing.

He and his wife just retired and moved to Yarnell from Colorado in January. The Fredrick's spent the past four years building this home from the ground up.

Walking across the property, it seemed there was no rhyme nor reason as to what burned.  The garage as well as a game room built just feet from the home still stand. Mixed in the rubble was evidence left behind by fire crews.

"They came in here and they actually slurried this house before the fire got here," said Fredrick.

While Fredrick and his grandson started on their next project, help arrived in the form of a front end loader, courtesy of Yavapai County.

As the men worked, Fredrick couldn't help but notice the mountains off in the distance where 19 firefighters lost their lives.

"They were right there, and we will always remember that," said Fredrick.

A somber reminder that's helped him and his grandson keep things in perspective.

Fredrick said he plans to rebuild in the spring.
