(WTVM) -

Captain Jack Long of the Columbus Police Department (CPD) was laid to rest today, July 11, at Fort Mitchell Cemetery.

The funeral took place at 11 a.m. at Cascade Hills Church in Columbus, followed by an awe inspiring procession to Fort Mitchell for the private burial ceremony.

Captain Long served as an officer with CPD for nearly 30 years. His career ended almost six months ago when he was diagnosed with liver cancer.

During his battle with the illness, the CPD and Columbus community rallied together in support, raising funds to help Long and his family with expenses and medical bills.

Long received full police honors, which include rifle firing and the playing of Taps.
