COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Columbus Police have arrested a juvenile who they have been questioning at the Public Safety Building.

He is accused of shooting a woman when she caught him rummaging through an SUV in her driveway.

It happened in the driveway of a home in the 6000 block of Dearborn Avenue near Miller Road just after 4 a.m. on Friday July 12.

According to neighbors, the 66-year-old female victim was alerted when her dog began barking. She looked outside and noticed one of the doors of her SUV was open.  Assuming that her husband forgot to close it, she stepped outside her door and was surprised by a teenager searching through the vehicle.

Police said the 15-year-old suspect pointed a gun at her and ordered her to get down on the ground.  As she was complying with his demands, he shot her in the leg above the knee.

Family says she was taken to a hospital for treatment but she was released hours later.

The juvenile fled the area before police arrived, but detectives were led to him by his own grandmother.  According to a neighbor, she and her grandson live several streets away from the address where the crime occurred and the woman became immediately suspicious of her grandson when she heard what happened.  Neighbors say she found out about the incident while watching the morning news.

Police are charging the 15-year-old with burglary, illegal possession of a firearm, and aggravated assault on a person older than 65: a crime that carries additional penalties based on the age of the victim.

Investigators believe the boy is responsible for several other vehicle break-ins throughout the night.

He will appear in court on July 15th.
