PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A man accused of fatally punching a 70-year-old homeless man at a Phoenix bus stop has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 30-year-old Joseph Nicholas Aguilera entered his plea Wednesday. His initial pretrial conference is scheduled for Sept. 25.

Aguilera was taken into custody after the 70-year-old victim died at a Phoenix hospital on July 14, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos.

Aguilera is believed to have left an AM/PM store at 1600 N. 27th Ave. just before 8 p.m. and then approached the unidentified victim near a bus stop, shouted at him and punched him in the left side of his head before leaving the scene, Martos said.

The victim fell to the ground and remained comatose until he died three days later. An autopsy found that the victim had suffered multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

A caller's tip led to Aguilera's arrest. A witness identified Aguilera as the suspect during a photo lineup.

During a police interview, Aguilera said he didn't recall assaulting anyone on that date.
