(WTVM) - Despite criticism, the state of Georgia is set to execute Warren Hill this Monday July 15 unless the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes.
Hill has gained national attention in the debate about giving someone with intellectual disabilities the death penalty.
Edward Dubose, NAACP Georgia State Conference President, weighed in on the matter.
"His IQ is less than 70, and so the medical doctors, three of them, who testified in this case initially, who said he was able to stand trial, all three have since recanted those testimonies and have confirmed that Mr. Warren Hill is in fact mentally retarded," said Dubose.
Hill was sentenced to die for the 1990 beating of a fellow inmate. At the time he was already serving a life sentence for killing his girlfriend.
