Columbus groups plan peace rallies in honor of Trayvon Martin

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A rally in honor of Trayvon Martin will be taking place this weekend in Columbus.

The Young Minority Leaders of Columbus and the N.A.A.C.P. have scheduled the demonstrations for Saturday, July 20, in the courtyard of the Government Center at noon.

The rally and candelight vigil will pay tribute to all victims of gun violence.

President Marquise Averette says he hopes these events spark a serious discussion about race relations and gun violence in America.

Averette says another purpose of the rally is to urge the Department of Justice to file a civil suit against Zimmerman.

A candle light vigil honoring the memory of Trayvon Martin will be hosted at Columbus State University from 8-10 p.m this Saturday.

On Sunday, a unity parade will be held at 6 p.m. in Valley. They will start at Wal-Mart and end in Lanette City.
