COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Goodwill hosted a job fair in Columbus on Thursday, but this time it was for a specific group.

At this event, Goodwill of Southern Rivers asked veterans and active duty personnel with a release date of no more than 60 days from the event to come and fill out applications. This fair couldn't have come at a better time.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced today June's unemployment rate increased to 8.6 percent. This is up from 8.3 percent in May. Last year, though, the unemployment rate was 9.1 percent.

If you are affected by these unemployment numbers or even the Fort Benning furloughs, you were encouraged to come out to Goodwill until 2 p.m.

And if you live in east Alabama, Goodwill on Pepperell Parkway in Opelika is also hosting a job fair today. Some of the employers there include Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, and Denny's.

This fair is going on until 4 p.m. Central Time.

They will also host job fairs on July 22 and 31, as well as August 5 and 14 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Central Time.
