PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A convicted felon has been sentenced to life in prison for attacking a man with a machete in Flagstaff.

Coconino County prosecutors say 29-year-old Luis Leyvas Sanchez was convicted in February on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The December 2012 attack left the victim with an 8-inch gash on the right side of his head as well as slash wounds on his neck, back and legs.

Sanchez, also known as "Sauce," was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals following a barricade and standoff situation at an apartment complex in San Jose.

Prosecutors said Sanchez had two prior armed robbery convictions. They say a state statute imposes a mandatory life sentence for anyone convicted of three serious offenses.

Andrew Jaurequi, also known as "Applez," was arrested shortly after the attack happened. He was booked into jail on a warrant for probation violation, and attempted homicide.

According to the victim, he was targeted by the pair, because of an earlier confrontation. The victim said the two suspects tracked him down to 1809 North Second St. and began attacking him with the weapon.

According to the initial report by the victim, he was held down by Jaurequi as Sanchez began attacking him with the machete. The attackers fled the scene in Jaurequi's yellow, four-door 1991 Cadillac, but were later caught.
