AL abortion law on hold until 2014 due to lawsuit

Posted: Updated:

An abortion law that was supposed to take effect August 1 is now being put on hold until next year.

The new law in Alabama is aimed to set stricter requirements for abortion doctors.

Planned Parenthood and the ACLU attorneys filed a lawsuit to temporarily stop the law, telling a federal judge today that they want to keep the new bill on hold until March 24, 2014.

The new law will require doctors at abortion clinics to have approval to admit patients to nearby hospitals. The plaintiffs argue that this would close three of Alabama's five licensed abortion clinics.
