Two officials would have ejected Clowney for 'The Hit'

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The most famous play in Jadeveon Clowney's career -- and maybe the most famous play in the history of the entire Gamecocks football program -- would have been worth an automatic ejection in the eyes of two officials.

Of course, we're talking about 'The Hit' -- the game-changing collision between Clowney and Michigan running back Vincent Smith at this year's Outback Bowl.

Clowney recovered the ball from Smith, and the Gamecocks would use that momentum to seal the victory against the Wolverines.

At Monday's ACC Football Kickoff, ACC officiating supervisor Doug Rhoads said he would have flagged Clowney for targeting, which would have drawn an automatic ejection this season.

A player is guilty of targeting when he initiates contact with the crown of the helmet.

Rhoads is not the only game official who would have tossed Clowney.

Fox Sports' officiating expert and former NFL Vice President of Officiating Mike Pereira says he would have reached the same conclusion.

"If I'm an official, based on ‘when in doubt,' he's out," told Pereira to reporters at Big 12 Media Days. "He's ejected. And when that goes to replay there's no way they overturn it. There's a great potential that hit causes an ejection this year."
