New AL law allows first responders to vote by absentee ballot

(WTVM) -

Gov. Bentley signed a new bill that will help first responders vote during elections.

This is an issue that came up during last fall's storms in the Northeast. When utility workers from Alabama went up to help with the recovery after Hurricane Sandy, it was right around the time of the election, which left those people with little options and little time to cast their votes.

With this new law, now those workers will be able to vote. The Governor held the ceremonial bill signing in front of the State Capitol. He said if Alabama National Guardsmen can vote by absentee with short notice, then so should first responders.

The new law goes into effect next week.
