Metro school board discusses long-term district success

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Metro school board is hearing ideas from parents and others about making schools better. That includes setting goals for improvement and, more importantly, how to accomplish them.

At a meeting Tuesday, board members discussed the five-year strategic plan drafted by the district that centers on three concepts. They want them to grow, achieve and feel empowered.

Under each of the three topics, the district has key benchmarks. For example, under the "achieve" topic, the district wants 71 percent of its students to be labeled proficient or advanced on state tests by 2015.

To get there, the district plans to focus on things such as quality teaching.

One idea presented at the meeting was to give every middle school student access to some type of personal technology device, such as an iPad.

The session Tuesday was simply a work meeting, and the board will likely vote on the plans at a later date.
