NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Dangerous weapons are in the wrong hands after a half-dozen Midstate police cars were burglarized in the past week.

At this point, a total of seven police-issued guns are in the hands of criminals, and the rash of crime has at least two local departments changing policies.

In one case, the crook stole a shotgun from a sergeant's cruiser parked right outside his house.

"We're not used to being the victim," said Greenbrier Mayor Billy Wilson.

One Greenbrier police cruiser is now out of service with a busted window, and the town's mayor is left baffled.

"What's the reason? Kill somebody? Sell it? You know, you don't want anyone hurt with a gun that should be safe in a police car," Wilson said.

Whoever broke into the Greenbrier police vehicle got away with an AR-15 assault rifle along with a couple boxes of ammunition.

But since Monday, the same sort of crime happened eight times to four different departments.

"Shocking. I mean, that's pretty brazen when you'll break into a police car," Wilson said.

Thieves hit five Metro police cruisers, a Davidson County Sheriff's Office patrol unit, a Metro Parks police vehicle and the cruiser in Greenbrier.

Evidence connects one of the Metro crimes to Edward Luna, who is also suspected of breaking into other cars in west Nashville and at Percy Warner Park.

Police said they believe Luna was with Kevin Tidwell and Austin Dodd this week.

Officers arrested Tidwell late Wednesday on a warrant for failure to appear, and during an interview he denied any involvement in the string of weapons thefts.

Now, police continue to search for Luna and Dodd, who is wanted for escaping from state authorities in April, believing they might be responsible for turning those who solve crimes into the victims.

"Pretty stupid if you ask me," Wilson said.

Police departments in Greenbrier and Metro changed policies this week, now requiring officers to keep most guns out of patrol units for extended periods of time.

If you have information about where to find Edward Luna or Austin Dodd, call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
