NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A 25-year veteran with the Metro Police Department was honored Thursday with a special award.

Officer Dennis Hamm received this year's Theodore Roosevelt police award. The national award goes to an officer who serves the community despite a serious handicap.

Hamm overcame a life-threatening disease through a liver transplant thanks to an organ donation in 2010.

Hamm received a $1,000 award, a medal, and a bust of Theodore Roosevelt. A bronze plaque, which bears a likeness of Roosevelt, that is on display in the lobby of police headquarters, now includes the inscription of Hamm's name.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association established the police awards program in honor of Roosevelt's distinguished service as President of the Board of Police Commissioners of New York City from 1895 to 1897, and in recognition of his lifelong admiration for the police.

Nashville is one of several cities, including New York, Boston and Los Angeles, in the U.S. to present the Roosevelt Award.
