Hiring Our Heroes event in Montgomery - July 30th

Hiring Our Heroes launched in March 2011 under the auspices of the US Chamber of Commerce. It is a nationwide effort to help veterans and military spouses find employment.

One of these job fairs is coming to Montgomery.

Date: Tuesday, July 30th, 2013, 10:00am to 1:00pm with workshops beginning at 9am

Venue: Double Tree Hotel and Convention Center, 120 Madison Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104

Local Partners: U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Greater Montgomery Chamber, the Department of Labor Veterans' Employment and Training Service (DOL VETS),
the  Alabama Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, The American Legion, AL DOL, NBC News and WSFA 12 News.

NBC News has been committed to this effort from the beginning. Much as it did a year ago, NBC and its local stations, like WSFA 12 News, are providing extensive coverage of the effort.

In less than two years, Hiring Our Heroes has hosted 434 hiring fairs in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico.  More than 18,400 veterans and military spouses have been hired by 1,000+ companies as a direct result of those fairs.

Online Resume Tool for Veterans – An important obstacle in finding employment for veterans is their inability to brand and market themselves. It can be challenging to articulate the totality of the military experience and put it into terms that employers can understand.  Many post-9/11 veterans, especially those under the age of 25, have never created a resume or interviewed with an employer. They often feel that their military experience does not apply to civilian life, and leave it off their resumes altogether!

To remedy this, Hiring Our Heroes is working with Toyota and Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Dakota Meyer on the Personal Branding Resume Engine, an online tool that helps transitioning veterans from every branch of service to translate their considerable skills into powerful resume verbiage. The tool launched on March 27th in New York.

Hiring 500,000 Heroes - On March 28, 2012, Hiring Our Heroes and Capital One launched the Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign, the largest private sector commitment of its kind, with a goal of engaging the business community to hire half a million veterans and military spouses by the end of 2014. The campaign has already secured more than 210,000 commitments and is closing in on 100,000 confirmed hires.

Veteran Unemployment Numbers - The unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans remains at nearly 10% and for veterans under the age of 25, it's nearly 30%. With a million more men and women expected to leave the military over the next five years, this is a critical time for our country to address this issue and help our heroes find meaningful employment.

Veterans' Jobs and Education Tools Portal – Similar to the Voting Tools portal provided to NBC stations prior to the 2012 presidential election, Comcast and NBCUniversal, in conjunction with Hiring Our Heroes, are creating a new NBC jobs and education web portal.

The online portal lives as part of NBCNews.com, and features Chamber resources and tools, in addition to NBC News content, resources and local community boards.
