(WTVM) - A mother and son are deploying to Afghanistan together.
Both are specialists with Maine's Army National Guard. They're in the same unit and are expecting to be deployed soon. They say it's comforting knowing they'll be overseas with a familiar face.
"I've always had that burning desire to serve my country, and to know that I can answer this call is just a source of pride, and like I said to have my son want to do that as well, and to be able to go, and to have him side by side serving with me, it's just an amazing opportunity," says Holly Parker, the mother.
Husband and father Randal Parker also serves in the Maine Army National Guard as a Sergeant First Class.
This time, he'll be staying home as his wife and son deploy.
The family was honored with a Blue Star Banner for their service.
