Metro schools makes push to hire more bus drivers

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

With only two days until the start of classes in Metro Nashville Public Schools, bus drivers are in short supply, so the district has put out the call to put more drivers behind the wheel.

"You carry the most expensive cargo in the world. Bottom line, there's not a dollar amount that's going to replace a child," said bus driver Eric Warfield.

The district can't put a number on how many drivers they need because they say they are always looking for bus drivers.

A job fair Tuesday sought to find additional good drivers with clean driving records and the ability to get a commercial driver's license.

"Bus drivers play a really important part in Metro schools. They are the first person and the last person kids see during the school day, so it's really like a rolling classroom," said Metro schools spokesman Joe Bass.

New hires were also at the training course Tuesday. Some were demonstrating the proper way to do daily safety checks on a bus, while others were perfecting their parallel parking skills.

It's a four-week training that involves time behind the wheel and also time in the classroom.

"They learn CPR training. They go through crisis prevention training. They know all of our discipline procedures and our rules so they can really work with the students well and keep our buses safe," Bass said.

Warfield not only drives, but he also trains new hires. And while a big part of the job is to know how to drive, that's only the beginning

"That's your first hurdle: understanding driving the bus, because you're going to have to do that not empty but up to 84 students per bus," he said.
