Stores ready for busy tax-free shopping weekend

Local stores are expecting big crowds for the annual sales tax holiday this weekend. And they're doing more than ever to try and draw shoppers in, during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

"We have a lot of staff working hard around the clock, to make sure we have stuff we can get for our guests, when they come in and shop," said Sam Newman, with Target. "Everyone is prepared with the list, so we can talk about what is tax-free, and what is not this weekend. So we're really excited."

Clothes, school supplies and computers priced under $1,500 are all tax-free Friday through Sunday, but many businesses are also sweetening the pot.

Stores at the Cool Springs Galleria are extending their shopping hours, and Sam's Club will allow non-members to shop, and avoid a service fee.

Plus, there will be discounts on other items, that aren't part of the sales tax holiday.

"We want to get you in the door, so a lot of the things that you would be looking for anyway for this weekend, are going to be on sale. So you are going to get the tax-free in addition to the extra sales price," Newman said.

One downside is school starts Thursday for many districts, while the tax-free weekend starts Friday. That's why some, like parent Courtney Jenrath, came to shop early.

"I'm going to try and avoid the crowds, and get everything they need for school, since they actually do start tomorrow, so they can bring it on the first day," she said.
