NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

From last-minute immunizations to class rosters and school supplies, the start of school is almost here for tens of thousands of kids in Nashville and several surrounding communities.

At Sylvan Park Elementary School, fourth-grade teacher Katie Rogers was busy Wednesday getting her classroom ready for her new batch of students.

Rogers is one of those teachers that parents hope their kids will get.

"You just keep the focus on the kids and realize that they are kids. If you are doing the best you can to reach all the different types of learners you have, then you're laying it all out there. You're doing the best that you can," she said.

Of course, the fourth-graders are the veterans of the elementary school routine. At the other end of the hallway, the kindergartners do get special attention because they have no idea what to expect.

"I've never been. I'm not in it yet," said incoming kindergarten student Bo Harrison.

But no matter how much screaming or squirming you do, no immunization shots means no kindergarten.

School starts Thursday, and there's already a paper due. We're talking about your student's certificate of immunizations. If you haven't turned it in yet, Metro Health is expecting big crowds in the coming days. If you haven't had your shots by Aug. 11, you're out of school.

"A lot of times, parents have a lot of things on their checklist of back-to-school, and usually they leave the shots to the very end," said Brian Todd, with the Metro Health Department.

While school has been out for weeks, school has been in the news a lot this summer with talk about teacher pay, teacher evaluations and standardized tests.

"I think as long as you keep what's best for kids at the forefront of everything we do, you can't go wrong when you're talking about decisions with kids, decisions with faculty, decisions with parents," said Sylvan Park Principal Susan Blankenship.
