Lanett Police Officer on administrative leave following on-duty shooting


A Lanett Police Officer has been placed on Administrative Leave with pay after being involved in an on-duty shooting. The incident occurred on August 4, 2013 at approximately 3:35 am. Officers were attempting to make a traffic stop on a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle came to a stop near the intersection of N. 14th Avenue and Cherry Drive where a passenger fled from the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was directed to show his hands at which time the driver sped towards the officer. The officer fired at the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle continued on N. 14th Court where the driver abandoned the vehicle. The driver was located at a residence on N. 14th Court in Lanett. Lanett EMS responded and the subject was airlifted to Columbus Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver was treated and released a short time later from Columbus Medical Center. 

The Alabama Bureau of Investigations was contacted and responded to the scene to work the officer involved shooting. The officer has been placed on Administrative Leave with pay pending the ABI investigation. No further details are available at this time pending the ABI investigation.
