LADONIA, AL (WTVM) -

A Ladonia resident is targeted by burglars twice in two weeks, but the second time did not go as planned for the suspects.

The family dog sent the would-be thieves running empty handed, and it was all caught on video.

On Friday, two suspected thieves casually walked down the driveway of a Georgia Avenue home in Ladonia with the intention of hauling away scrap metal.  Unbeknownst to them, a boxer named Bama was lying in wait, hoping to catch the burglars moving in on his turf.

"The second they kicked that gate in, my dog charges at them and chased them out of here.  And you can also see the getaway car headed back out.  They're probably mad because they got chased by a dog.  They got away with nothing more than a couple bites on the leg," said proud dog owner, Michael Stephens.

It was a late victory for Stephens, whose backyard stockpile of scrap metal was hit by burglars two weeks earlier.  The full-time property manager said the thieves took thousands of dollars worth of discarded material that he has painstakingly gathered from repair jobs over the years.  He had enough loose copper and brass parts to fill four garbage cans.

"I've been collecting for a long time.  It takes years to get 55-gallon garbage cans  when you only get a little piece at a time from each little air conditioner job or water heater job you do," said Stephens.

Stephens had a feeling the thieves would return for the rest soon, so he invested in high-tech security. But it turned out his best defense works for dog food.

"They used my dollies and pulled my copper and brass out of here.  When I came home, the fence was torn down.  The following week I took what was left of my scrap metal and made some money.  I bought a camera system and I put the camera system up and I had my dog alert and ready to go this time, whereas last time, he wasn't quite as prepared for it.  I think he got the best of them, as ya'll see in the video."

Police are still looking for the two men featured in that video.  The man in the red is wearing a shirt that reads, ‘Went On Vacation, Left On Probation,' across the back.  Stephens said he does not believe he has ever seen them before.  If you recognize the suspects, you are asked to call police.
