Authorities investigating how man acquired baby

A local man is in custody, and being questioned about whether he bought a newborn baby from the baby's parents.

"Kansas City police, this morning, stopped the car over on the east side of Kansas City, MO, on a traffic violation, and a pick-up order that was issued by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, in regards to an individual we wanted to talk to about the welfare of a child," said Jackson County Sheriff Mike Sharp.

It was a routine traffic stop near Interstate 435 and Truman Road that brought to a head a seven-month investigation between the FBI, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and Texas authorities.

According to sources, local authorities received a tip earlier in the year about a now seven-month-old baby boy. The tipster claimed a local man went down to Texas, and either bought the baby from the boy's parents or traded something in exchange for the baby.

"We're not sure if it was an abduction, we're not sure what we have here right now, because it's still under investigation," Sharp said.

According to sources, the man traveled to Baytown, TX, outside of Houston, to make the deal for the baby in February, and then picked him up shortly after he was born. The Jackson County Sheriff said they're keeping the details of the investigation quiet, because they have a lot of work left to do. They confirmed the baby boy is safe with the division of family services.

"Anytime the welfare of a child is involved, it's a top priority for all of law-enforcement. It has the possibility of being a sad story," Sharp said.

Sources say the baby was never reported missing by his mother or father. Authorities said they are getting different stories from everyone involved.
