MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -

Violators beware…if you pass a stopped school bus, you could receive a $300 ticket in the mail from the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office.

It's all part of a program called "Stop Arm." The Georgia Legislator gave school districts the green light to mount cameras on their school buses to catch violators.

Muscogee County Schools implemented the program at the end of the 2012-2013 school year, installing cameras on 60 school buses. School officials conducted a survey last year and found as many as 175 drivers ignored the stop arm in one day.

The year prior, there were 156 violators during the same time period. The video will be reviewed by the sheriff's office.

If they deem it necessary, drivers will be ticketed. First time offenders will be fined $300.00, while second offenses will be $750 and the third time around is punishable by $1,000.

The civil action can be contested in Municipal Court.
