LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - It's the largest infrastructure project in Lee County's history.
An estimated 28 road and bridge improvement projects costing about $20 million will be completed over the next five years.
It's part of Alabama Governor Robert Bentley's A-TRIP initiative, or Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation Improvement Project.
City and county leaders say it's time to act before roads become hazards.
"We have seen major infrastructure failures in other parts of the country, some of these areas are 50 years old and they are starting to fail," said Roger Rendleman, Lee County Administrator.
A-TRIP will provide 80 percent of the funding, and local governments will contribute the remaining 20 percent.
