Pilot, co-pilot killed in early morning crash near Birmingham Airport

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WTVM) -

A large cargo plane crashed this morning near Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport. The pilot and co-worker were killed in crash. 

The Mayor of Birmingham says only the pilot and co-pilot were onboard the UPS cargo plane. They departed from Louisville, KY. 

One of the pilots, Shanda Fanning, was from Tennessee.

The plane crashed in an open field and the fire has been suppressed. The plane broke into pieces and was completely consumed by the fire. 

The National Transportation Safety Board launched a Go-Team to investigate the crash. 

There are reports of debris on homes and in years a half-mile from the crash site. 

The crash has had no impact on other flights at Birmingham Airport. There was no distress signal at the Birmingham airport tower.'

The plane was only half a mile from the runway.
