Superintendent John Barge visits Harris Co. schools

Posted: Updated:
HARRIS COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -

Teachers and students in Harris County had a chance to show off for the new state Superintendent.

John Barge visited Park Elementary School in Hamilton as part of a three-day swing through the state. He's promoting an initiative called "Georgia's Future Now".

He says local visits are an excellent way to find out what's actually happening in schools.

"But it also keeps you well-rounded, keeps you connected to teachers to what's going on in classrooms, with principals. Gives them an opportunity to talk with me about things that they may be concerned about. To show off things that are going well, because so many times public education takes a beating," says Barge.

He says now is the time build education up, not tear it down. He says the initiative is designed to prepare students today for either college or careers tomorrow.
