(WTVM) -

After one Georgia baby is home safe with his mother after a scary ordeal, his kidnapper made her first appearance in court today, August 15.

Authorities say Samantha Barrett, 22, a friend of the baby's mother, kidnapped 8-month-old Kaidyn Stover, and led deputies on a high speed chase with the baby in the car. She is charged with attempting to elude a police officer, cruelty to children, reckless conduct, and driving with a suspended or revoked licence.

Kristen Howard, the child's mother, said that she considered Barrett to be a friend until Barrett stole Howard's car with Kaidyn inside.

An AMBER Alert was issued yesterday morning, August 14. At around 12:30 p.m. the same day, Henry County Police responded to a 911 call saying that Barrett was spotted on I-75 South.

During the chase that ensued, Barrett attempted to ram police cars that pursued her for 20 miles at speeds reaching 90 miles per hour, all with the baby in the back seat.

The chase ended with Barrett crashing into a ditch. When she tried to flee on foot, Sheriff's deputies from Butts and Lamar Counties chased her down. One deputy from Butts county went straight for the back seat to rescue the baby from the wrecked vehicle.

The boy was unharmed, and is now back with his mother.

Howard was irate, but says she and her baby are both doing well.

In court today, the judge ordered Barrett to remain in jail on $20,000 bond. She will not be released due to pending charges in Bartow, Lamar and Cobb Counties.
