MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A nurse is facing charges in connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl who was in her care almost one year ago.

Demequa Bonds, 34, of Cordova, was indicted by a grand jury on one count of reckless homicide.

In February, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation began investigating Bonds after the death of 3-year-old Kayla Andrews, who suffered from a medical condition that required 24 hour nursing care.

Bonds was a licensed practical nurse employed by Where The Heart Is, Inc., a state certified home health care agency that specializes in providing care to pediatric and ventilator dependent patients in Shelby County, Tipton County, and Fayette County.

TBI reports that Kayla died in her Bartlett home after a "negligent incident caused by Bonds". The death happened one year ago, on August 27, 2012.

Kayla was born with Moebius Syndrome. She relied on a ventilator and 24-hour medical care.

Bonds was hired to be her in-home nurse.

Because of Kayla's medical condition, police were not immediately notified when she died one year ago. TBI began investigating after someone at West Tennessee Healthcare tipped them off.

"She came to us and made an allegation that she felt like Ms. Bonds was negligent and responsible for Kayla Andrew's death," said Kristin Helm, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. "That referral coming to us was a very integral part of us getting this case resolved."

Bonds was booked into the Shelby County Jail, and indicted on August 6. She was released on a $10,000 bond.

When Action News 5's Nick Kenney stopped by her listed address to speak with her, the man who answered the door sent him away.

"This is personal business. This is my house. I don't want the news coming to my house," he said.

Kayla Andrew's family provided Action News 5 with her photo, but were not yet ready for an interview.

TBI is not releasing details of what the "negligent incident" was that reportedly caused the little girl's death. No other arrests are expected in the case.
