DOD taking new action against military sexual assaults

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel outlined a series of steps today, August 15, to reduce and respond to sexual assault cases in the military.

In a memo, he unveiled seven new directives, including the creation of a victim's advocacy program to give accusers legal advice and representation throughout the justice process.

The steps also allow for accusers in sex assault cases to transfer or get reassigned.

Pentagon Spokesperson George Little says, "Eliminating sexual assault from the United States Armed Forces continues to be one of the Department of Defense's top priorities. Every service member and DOD civilian deserves a safe environment in which they are free from the threat of sexual harassment and assault."

A former Criminal Investigation Division special agent will be speaking to battalion and brigade command teams at Fort Benning about combating sexual assaults on August 19. Follow this link for more information.
