University of Alabama cornerback Geno Smith was arrested on DUI charges Sunday morning.
Smith is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $1,000 bond, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office web site.
FOX6 contacted Brent Blankley with the Tuscaloosa Police Department who said the arrest was made by UA Campus Police. They then referred all questions to UA Media Relations.
Around 2:30 p.m., the university issued the following statement from Coach Nick Saban on Geno Smith's arrest:
"This is obviously not the kind of behavior we expect from our players. I don't have all of the details at this point and will handle it appropriately once I've had a chance to review the information," Saban said.
Smith, a sophomore from Atlanta, is competing with Deion Belue and John Fulton for a starting role at cornerback and is expected to be a heavy contributor.
