Smith: "No leader" in ASU's QB battle

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Mike White's Albany State Golden Rams are three weeks away from kicking off against North Greenville to open the 2013 season, but it's still unknown who will take the snaps.

ASU's three quarterbacks, Rodney Castlin, Frank Rivers, and Charod Williams, continue to battle it out for the starting role.

Many believe Rivers is the favorite after transferring from Grambling State this offseason.

Castlin has been with the Rams the longest. He was the third string QB last season.

Williams is a redshirt freshman from Atlanta's Carver High School.

Albany State offensive coordinator Steve Smith says he doesn't know when he'll name the starter, but feels he has plenty of time before the Rams' first game.

"It's just still a competition right now. The game is not until September 7, so we have a few weeks before we need to do that," Smith says. "Right now we're just focusing on everybody getting better. Right now they're just still competing."

Smith says he's seen good and bad things out of all three.

"All of them can throw. All of them are making good decisions. All of them are making mistakes," Smith says. "There's pros and cons on both ends for all three quarterbacks."

"Is there a leader in the clubhouse?" asks WALB's Jake Wallace.

"No leader in the clubhouse," laughs Smith.

Smith says the offense has responded since head coach Mike White called the team's performance "sluggish" during the Rams' first practice last Monday.

"It has improved but we're not where we want to be. There's no light at the end of the tunnel right now," he says. "What we're trying to do is make sure that we have everything installed is going correctly. You know, knowing which route you're running, knowing what the schemes are, make sure you're blocking the right guy and all those types of things are the most important things right now."

The Golden Rams open the 2013 season at North Greenville September 7.
