CAIRO (RNN) - On Monday, 25 Egyptian soldiers were ambushed and killed with rocket-propelled grenades on the Sinai Peninsula near Gaza. Egypt closed the crossing at Rafah in response to the attack.

The Muslim Brotherhood has condemned the attack on the soldiers.

"Our peaceful protests (are) stronger than any weapon, and we don't accept any violence," said Murad Mohamad Ali, media advisor to the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party.

Also on Monday, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Badie, was arrested in Nasr City.

Badies' arrest was part of the Egyptian security forces' attempt to put pressure on the Muslim Brotherhood.

In light of the ongoing conflict in Egypt, the United States on Tuesday decided to temporarily suspend some aid to Egypt. The U.S. does have the option to either restore the aid or cut it completely.

"It is evaluated in tranches and while that broader package of assistance is under review, there are some smaller packages that have moved forward," said Deputy White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.

European Union foreign ministers will soon make a decision regarding aid to Egypt.
