MCSD has disaster plans in place to keep students safe

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

There have never been any school shootings in Muscogee County, and school security officials are hoping to keep it that way.

"The Muscogee County School District, the Columbus Police Department, the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office and the Muscogee County Marshall's Office all work hand in hand as a law enforcement team to insure that the Muscogee County School District is safe as humanly possible for all of our children to be in school," said Scott Thomann with Muscogee County School District Security.

One of the biggest measures of security for Muscogee County are doors that require you to press a button and be buzzed in by security in order to enter the school.

"It's not to offend, but to assure that the people who are leaving with the children are in fact lawfully there to take possession of that child," Thomann said.

There are also resource officers on hand around the clock. Communications Director Valerie Fuller says students also have several drills each year to prepare for potential disaster.

"We are constantly evolving to identify an area where we may need to put more resource officers," Fuller said.

Security plans vary from school to school. Plans are not made public for security reasons and change frequently based on school and student needs.

Fuller also says that the district has a Security Task Force reports back to the school board on the needs for schools in the county.
