ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

No one would blame the Byne Saints if they went winless in 2013.

It's the Saints' first year on the gridiron, and of the team's 14 players, only five had previous organized football experience.

But the Saints won't be going winless this season.

Not after a dominant 34-0 shutout victory over Warner Robins' Westside Baptist Friday night.

"They had a great attitude, a great week of practice," says head coach Trevor Permison. "It paid off Friday night."

The Saints' first game didn't go as well as they hoped, a 44-0 loss to Appling Christian.

But Permison says the team worked hard in practice after the loss, and the Saints amped up the effort even more after the win.

"After getting that win and playing really well, especially on defense, we definitely built a lot of confidence," says Permison. "Now we just have to worry about not getting too big, not getting too high and thinking too highly of ourselves and still wanting to have that work ethic."

Permison credits the team's five "veterans" for stepping up to become team leaders.

"They know what to expect. They've been there before," he says. "Most of them have jumped in there, taken leadership roles."

"We've taken on a lot just by mentoring, and kind of showing them what to do and how to do it correctly," says sophomore QB Seth Hanniford.

Now the Saints hope to achieve another milestone- earning the program's first home victory.

Byne hosts Coastal Homeschool Friday night in Putney, and the Saints expect a good atmosphere.

"I think it should be good. Everyone's real excited," says Hanniford. "Everybody at school is real happy that we won, so I know the team's happy. It should be good this Friday night."

The Saints kick off in Putney against Coastal at 7:30 Friday.
