CBS Atlanta News is learning more about the man who entered Ronald E. McNair Discovery Academy Tuesday afternoon and fired shots at police officers.

Michael Brandon Hill, 20, surrendered after a shootout with police.

According to Henry County officials, Hill, who is currently in the DeKalb County Jail, has a criminal history.

He was arrested as a juvenile, and just this past March, he was arrested for making terroristic threats. [See the incident report]

Hill is charged with a long list of crimes, including aggravated assault, terroristic threats and acts, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, after police say he stormed into the school with his AK-47 taking hostages.

According to police, Hill fired at least 12 rounds at police as they entered the school to try and end the situation.

"He started to fire from inside the school at our officers. He had one or two of the staff members. He was holding them captive. He would continue to fire upon officers. Officers were able to return fire. No one was injured. He surrendered to police authorities here in DeKalb," said DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander.

The Office of the Public Defender for the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit released the following statement on Wednesday afternoon:

"The Public Defender's Office is representing Mr. Michael Brandon Hill, a young man with a long history of mental health issues. Mr. Hill is being represented by members of our Mental Health Division and he has decided to waive his first appearance hearing. We are all very thankful that no one was hurt in this incident and that all of the children are safe."

Hill's preliminary hearing is Sept. 5 at 9 a.m. in DeKalb County Magistrate Court.

CBSAtlanta.com will have more information about Hill as it becomes available.
